My First Trip to the Brooklyn Museum

I'm usually a Met person. It has been my habit, for most of my life, to default to a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art if a more specific plan for NYC did not exist.
For example: "Let's go to the city!" "Yeah!" "What should we do?" "....we could go to the Met." "Okay!"
But now that I live in the city, a whole new world of museum possibilities has been opened to me. The Brooklyn museum has turned out to be especially convenient (since I live in Brooklyn and all), but in the the three months that we've lived here I hadn't actually gotten myself there. So a couple of weeks ago my good friend Trent came to the city, and the above conversation occurred almost exactly, except that curiously enough we didn't even consider the Met - good old Brooklyn won out this time. And we were not disappointed. Although the Met will always be my main museum squeeze, I'd have to say I think the Brooklyn Museum is my new boyfriend on the side.

The Making of a Masterpiece

Recently my husband and I had the pleasure of getting together with friends of ours, Sean and Laura, to make a short film. While I've made plenty of silly internet videos in my time, I learned that silly internet videos are a lot more fun (and a lot less silly) when you have real equipment and someone that knows how to use it...thank goodness for friends with film degrees.

I took a few photos during our impromtu shoot, and you will find a link where you can watch the finished product below.

After the storm

Honestly I've been avoiding making a new post this past week because I wasn't at all sure what it should be. As soon as Hurricane Sandy hit, I felt like as a photographer I should be out there capturing all of the gritty, awful images of destruction. But something just didn't feel right about that to me, and the longer I waited the more pictures other people took and eventually I just felt that there would be no point in more pictures of the same horrible scenes. Don't get me wrong, I think there is something important about documenting life, no matter how horrible, but I almost felt that I would have been intruding on a sadness that was too personal to so many and too impersonal to me, who was hardly affected by the storm at all.
But still I wanted to acknowledge the occurrence of Hurricane Sandy, so I decided to do something different. I collected some of my favorite pictures of the city (Some in Brooklyn, some in Manhattan) as a reminder of what we have been, what we are, and what we will be again. It's a very small gesture, but I hope that it just serves as a tribute to how beautiful the city can be and a reminder that one event will not stop that.
So enjoy these pictures, and check out this article on treehugger.com to see what you can do to help victims of Hurricane Sandy:

Prospect Park...or Middle Earth? Sometimes very hard to tell...

The best thing about New York? Sharing it with amazing friends. Photo with amazing friend Lydia, taken by amazing friend Trent.

Feline friends from afar...

Or at least I like to think that they're friends. I suppose that's sort of like assuming that the lady who stumbled into this same courtyard to pee (true story) is my friend (untrue story), but I still like to imagine that my cats have secret cat conversations with the other cats of Brooklyn. Hopefully it's not to plan an escape, but you never know.

CATS EVERYWHERE

There are many things, in my opinion, to love about Brooklyn. And as great as all of those things are, they pale in comparison next to what I consider to be Brooklyn's greatest asset: CATS. Cats, EVERYWHERE. YESSSSSSS.

Credit goes to my husband Tim for this excellent photo of the mom and kittens who hang out in our courtyard.

Woods? In the city?!

Can you guess where this photo was taken? Pennsylvania, perhaps? Tennessee? Nay, I tell you, nay. If you did, however, shout out "Brooklyn!" - then you would have been right. Our very own Prospect Park, ladies and gentlemen - currently my favorite place in Brooklyn.

Where did the summer go?

And the rest of winter and all of spring, for that matter. All were filled with flowers, friends, cats, CATS, and even some dogs. It was, unfortunately, not filled with blogging. It did include, however, that thrilling combination of joy and terror: moving!
So enjoy these snippets of a summer gone by too fast, and look forward to visions of my new backdrop: New York, New York!
Spring blooms!

And finally, this summer a dear friend left us. Gwynnie will always be remembered with love and fondness.

Lydia

I am aware that humans on my blog are few and far between. Inanimate objects and cats are often so much more accessible than humans. I do, however, know a few photographic humans and my dear friend Lydia is one of them. Please note that the artwork in the photographs is by Lydia - both beautiful and artistically talented.

Glamour shots with Luna

My cats are so cute, it kind of hurts me to look at them. But you know what they say, it hurts sooooo good.

At this point, aren't you just lying on the ground sobbing with the agony of all the unbearable cuteness? I sure as hell know I am.

Tea with friends

Tea is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world. But tea with friends? Let me correct that - tea with friends...and books?! Heaven, plain and simple.

So apparently I'm not that great at consistency...Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and all of those holidays in between!!!

The holidays have come and gone and blogging somehow got lost in the shuffle. Never fear, I was, however, snapping photos diligently, I was just hoarding them away like the greedy miser that I occasionally am. Enjoy these select gems from the various holidays that occurred while I was slacking.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My handsome family members enjoying the Christmas tree at the famous Hollywood restaurant in Mississippi...home of the fried dill pickle!

Was it for Christmas? New Year's? No one really knows, but since when are fireworks ever inappropriate?

Second Christmas at my in-law's. A flurry of wrapping paper and someone's flannel sleeve illustrates the greed that is formed when receiving Christmas gifts an entire week late.

Nothing says Christmas like The Nutcracker, and nothing says The Nutcracker like a flurry of snowflakes.
